Music has been used for healing across a wide variety of cultures throughout the history of time, and the instruments that human beings have created have long been a beautiful way of expressing emotions that don’t always need to be said in words. The piano, in particular, is an instrument known for being able to tell a powerful story through music alone. Some studies have even found that the “tingle” or chill we feel upon hearing emotion-inducing music - such as classical music - can activate a response in our parasympathetic nervous system and the reward-related regions of the brain.
The emotions evoked by music can be both good and bad, and sometimes, a combination of both. Piano music can bring about feelings of wistfulness and nostalgia - and studies have found that the latter is associated with feelings of being loved, more meaning and purpose, and an increased connection with others as well as our authentic selves.
