The material

One model, five elements, thirty-one lessons.

Well-being advice online is a maze of conflicting claims. This course teaches a single validated framework β€” the PERMA model β€” one element per module, so nothing moves on until you have actually used it.

Positive Emotions

How joy, gratitude and optimism are built rather than waited for β€” and what they do to your body, brain and immune system.

Engagement

The flow state: how to direct attention into work that uses your strengths, so absorption replaces effort.

Relationships

Relationship quality predicts well-being better than any other single factor. This module is about improving it deliberately.

Meaning

Connecting to something larger than yourself, and how your sense of purpose changes between your twenties and your fifties.

Accomplishment

What the science says about people who lead thriving lives, and the part character plays in persevering when it is hard.

Mastery, not exposure. Each module completes before the next begins, so you finish having practised all five elements rather than having heard about them.

Also covered
Character strengths

Identifying what you are actually good at, and building the week around it rather than around your weaknesses.

Emotional self-regulation

Shifting an experience from negative to positive by changing where awareness goes, not by suppressing anything.

Goal-setting that holds

Proven techniques for setting, pursuing and finishing the things that matter, drawn from twenty years of clinical practice.

Where a lot of capable people are

Tired of feeling like you want more out of life?

This is common among ambitious, driven people β€” and it is rarely fixed by trying harder at the same things.

Illustration of feeling stuck and unfulfilled despite outward success
You feel stuck

Unfulfilled, or unsure about your direction β€” capable of more, without a clear sense of what or how.

Self-doubt behind the success

From outside it looks fine. Inside there is an inner critic holding you back from what you could do.

Motivation comes and goes

You have the aspirations. Turning them into finished things is where it keeps breaking down.

No time for any of it

Balancing work, life and growth is exhausting, and your own well-being is the thing that gets postponed.

Be strategic about it instead

Thriving is not a personality you either have or lack. It has been studied for decades, and the findings reduce to five elements you can work on deliberately β€” which is exactly what the next five weeks do.

What changes

Thriving, not just surviving.

Traditional psychology concentrates on what is wrong with you. Positive psychology starts from your strengths and builds β€” which is why the work compounds instead of merely repairing.

Clarity on strengths and values

Know what you are for and what you are good at, so daily choices stop being negotiated from scratch.

Deeper connections

Better communication and empathy, applied to the relationships that turn out to matter most for well-being.

Resilience under pressure

Tools to manage stress, absorb setbacks and recover β€” rather than white-knuckling through and hoping.

Goals you actually finish

Proven techniques for setting, pursuing and completing what matters, and the pride that follows.

What you will learn in How to Thrive with Dr Dan Tomasulo
Science, with the stories attached.

The tools are grounded in research. What makes them stick is that they arrive with real cases from Dan's twenty-plus years as a clinician, researcher and Columbia professor β€” so you see the idea working before you try it.

Right now

Life happens to you.

  • Ambition and rest feel like opposites, so you get neither properly
  • Goals stay aspirations because nothing turns them into a routine
  • Relationships get whatever attention is left at the end of the day
  • Growth means reading more advice, not changing anything
After five weeks

You design it.

  • Ambition and relaxation are integrated rather than competing
  • You have techniques for setting goals and a routine that carries them
  • Connection is something you build on purpose, with method
  • You leave with a toolkit, not a reading list

Who it's for

For anyone ready to stop postponing their own life.

You feel stuck or unfulfilled

Uncertain about direction, and looking for a structure rather than more inspiration.

You're successful but doubting

Outward achievement, an inner critic. This is about closing that gap rather than ignoring it.

You're at a turning point

A new chapter, a career change, retirement β€” a moment where the next shape of things is undecided.

You want deeper relationships

Building and keeping meaningful connections, with method rather than good intentions.

You're overwhelmed by stress

Work, life and personal growth all competing, and well-being always last in the queue.

Complete beginners

No prior knowledge of positive psychology needed. The course builds everything from scratch.

Inside the course

Five modules in five weeks to flourish.

Built for ten minutes a day: 31 short expert-led video lessons, a daily task with each one, three bonuses and lifetime access to the material. A certificate of completion comes with it.

The curriculum

Five modules. Five weeks. One element at a time.

In just ten minutes a day, expert-designed lessons and practical exercises work through optimal psychological functioning, flourishing relationships, purposeful living and the art of accomplishment.

Week 1What Makes Us Thrive & The Power of Positive Emotions

What positive emotions actually are, how they work, and how to sustain them. This module covers their measurable effect on the body, brain and immune system, traces how both positive and negative emotions shaped us historically, and looks at why attitude matters differently at home, at work and in study.

Week 2Flow & The Power of Engagement

Flow β€” being β€œin the zone” β€” is complete absorption in what you are doing. These lessons cover how to move an experience from negative to positive by directing awareness, how to become more authentic, and how character strengths, emotional self-regulation and goal-setting combine to make flow reachable.

Week 3Boosting Relationship Well-Being

Relationship quality predicts well-being more strongly than any other single factor. This module examines the influence of family, friends, partners and colleagues, and what it takes to strengthen each of them deliberately rather than by accident.

Week 4Finding Purpose & Meaning

What creates meaning for you specifically, and how a sense of purpose shifts between your twenties and your fifties. The module gives you strategies for uncovering your larger purpose and shows the difference it makes to your capacity to thrive.

Week 5The Psychology of Accomplishment

What the research says about people who lead thriving lives, and how to apply it to your own. A thriving life is defined in large part by a sense of accomplishment β€” and character is what carries you through the stretch where it stops being enjoyable.

What is the How to Thrive course?

A self-paced, five-week programme built on the PERMA model β€” positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment. Thirty-one short lessons and daily practical tasks take one element at a time, so you finish having used all five rather than having read about them.

What is the PERMA model?

A holistic framework for well-being built on five core elements: Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment. Each module of the course covers one element in full before moving on β€” a mastery-based structure rather than a survey.

How much time will I need each day?

About ten minutes a day. Lessons are short and each comes with a practical task designed to fold into a busy schedule rather than compete with it.

Can I start anytime, and what if I miss a day?

Yes. The course is flexible and self-paced, so you can start whenever you are ready. You have lifetime access, so you can catch up or revisit any module whenever it suits you.

What will I learn?

Across the five weeks you will learn how to:

  • Gain clarity on your strengths, values and purpose, and live with intention
  • Build deeper connections through better communication and empathy
  • Navigate challenges, manage stress and recover from setbacks
  • Set, pursue and accomplish goals with proven techniques
  • Build routines that support mental, emotional and physical health
  • Integrate ambition with rest instead of trading one for the other
How is the course structured?

Five weekly modules containing:

  • 31 short expert-led video lessons with Dan Tomasulo
  • Daily tasks to apply what you have just learned
  • A Well-Being Planner and a Positive Psychology Toolkit
  • Dan's personal masterclass, closing with a guided meditation
  • A certificate of completion
Do I need any prior knowledge?

None. The course is built to support anyone on their well-being journey, whether you are starting out or deepening an existing practice.

How long do I have access?

Lifetime access to all thirty-one lessons, the three bonuses and the accompanying material, so you can return whenever you need a refresher.

Is this a substitute for therapy or medical care?

No. This is educational well-being content covering positive psychology and everyday habits. It is not therapy, diagnosis, treatment for depression or any other condition, or a substitute for care from a qualified professional.
