Yoga at Home: Why It’s Great & How to Get Started

There are countless ways that yoga can benefit your well-being. Regardless of whether your level is “Yoga for Beginners”, or you’re a 500-hour seasoned yogi, the ancient art of various stretches and poses will increase your strength, mobility, and flexibility; not to mention calm your mind, release stuck energy, and potentially bring you greater focus and better sleep.

Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and its popularity shows no sign of waning. With its numerous health benefits, it’s no surprise that many people are turning to it as a way to improve their physical and mental well-being.

But not everyone has the luxury of disposable transit time, access to classes, or the required financial freedom to visit the local yoga studio. While many subscribe to the observations from a century of sociologists, psychologists, and historians who note hive-like experience through synchronized movement producing a kind of collective effervescence and harmony – you don’t need to be part of group movement to flourish. You can create a self-rewarding yoga practice from the comfort of your own home and reap the same well-being and mindfulness rewards.

Join Infijoy's 7-Day Yoga Challenge to create your own at-home yoga practice

Practicing yoga at home is convenient. With a busy schedule, it can be difficult to find time to attend a class, but when you have a yoga mat and a quiet space at home, you can practice whenever it suits you; the flexibility of which means that you can tailor your practice to your schedule and your needs. And for those amongst us that don’t particularly like group activity, your personal space affords greater privacy, and an ability to personalize the practice to your own needs – be it focusing on a particular area of the body, the movement, manipulation of energy like in Kundalini Yoga, on specific poses, or incorporating more meditation into the routine.

One of the greatest benefits of a home yoga practice is the ability to create a consistent routine. By practicing regularly, you can develop a deeper understanding of your body and your practice, and you can see improvements in your strength, flexibility, and overall health. Not to mention establishing a routine can help you to develop mindfulness and reduce stress, as you take time each day to focus on your breath and your body.

If you do decide to go it alone at home, don’t be intimidated. Once you’ve figured out which type of yoga is best suited to your needs, with these few simple steps, you can begin your journey towards a consistent and fulfilling practice, with a personalized yoga sequence to draw from regularly.

  1. Set up a space: Find a quiet, clutter-free space in your home where you can practice yoga. You don't need a lot of room, just enough for your mat and enough space to move around. Make sure the space has good ventilation and natural light and is free from distractions.
  2. Gather your equipment: All you need to start is a yoga mat. If you have other props, such as blocks or straps, you can use them too. However, they are not essential, and you can improvise with household items like books or pillows.
  3. Choose a time: Schedule a regular time to practice yoga every day. This could be early in the morning, during your lunch break, or in the evening. Choose a time that works for you and stick to it. Remember, consistency is key.
  4. Start with simple poses: If you're new to yoga, start with simple poses and work your way up. Focus on the fundamentals of yoga, such as proper alignment and breathing. Gradually add more challenging poses as your practice progresses.
  5. Incorporate meditation: Like the physical practice of yoga, meditation also forms a profound connection with the universe, bringing a higher state of consciousness. But even soothing meditative soundscapes can ground you for your practice.
  6. Be patient: Remember that developing a consistent yoga practice takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself and don't get discouraged if you can't do everything perfectly from the beginning. Listen to your body and progress at your own pace.
  7. Seek guidance: If you have questions or concerns about your home yoga practice, seek guidance from a qualified yoga teacher. They can provide feedback on your alignment and offer modifications to suit your individual needs.

By committing to a regular practice – at home or otherwise – you are taking time for yourself and prioritizing your health and well-being in an incredible display of self-discipline. Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, just roll out your mat and start practicing.
